“We welcome the judgement passed by the special court trying POCSO cases in Coimbatore awarding death penalty to the accused and ordering Rs 10 lakh compensation to the girl’s family. The court also directed the police to hold further enquiry into the petition filed by the girl’s mother seeking further probe into the forensic report which alleges involvement of two persons,” CPM state secretary K Balakrishnan said in a statement.

He said that the court order reinstates the public confidence at a time when the sexual assault on the women and the child were on rise across the country. He urged the police to take appropriate steps to punish the second person involved in the gruesome rape and murder of the girl child.

Meanwhile, CPM has condemned the BJP and the communal forces that prevented conferring of the honorary doctorate for poet-lyricist Vairamuthu by the SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST).

Balakrishnan said, SRM university should not budge to the pressure of the Hindutuva groups and should go ahead with the conferring the honorary doctorate on the Tamil poet.
