CPM state secretary K Balakrishnan on Friday wrote to Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami urging him to suspend all the works on the National Population Register (NPR) as it facilitates implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

“Even though the AIADMK had supported the amendment to the Citizenship Act in the Parliament, the Tamil Nadu government like other parties that supported the bill should announce that the NPR and the NRC would not be implemented,” he wrote in a letter to the Chief Minister.
Balakrishnan said that taking into the account that the NRC would be done if the NPR is completed, the state government suspend the work on the NPR like the Kerala and West Bengal government considering the national interest, social welfare and the protection to the Constitution. “There is tension prevailing among the public in the state irrespective of their political affiliation they are opposed to the NPR and the NRC,” he said.
The Marxist party leader said that the amendment brought by the BJP government in the Citizenship Act has not only created panic among the minorities, but also all sections of the public. “When the amendment was proposed, a section of leader warned that it would be followed by the implementation of the NRP and the NRC which could create social tension across the country. Confirming the apprehensions, the Centre has allocated funds for the implementation of the NPR,” he said.
“It has been confirmed that there is no need for creating a new law for the implementation of the NRC and it is enough to implement the NPR alone as it will create a national register of citizens,” he added.
