At present, there are 585 engineering colleges and 520 polytechnic institutions functioning in the State. The engineering colleges admit at least 80,000 students every year, while the polytechnic institutions’ intake is around 10 lakh students every year for various diploma courses.

A senior official from DoTE told DT Next that the country has adapted several Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in technical education, and Tamil Nadu is synchronising with the development of SDG indicators and also geared up to measure the achievements at State and sub-State level.

“In continuation of the State’s initiative, as per the direction given by the Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission, DoTE had submitted a vision document 2030 for ‘inclusive and equitable quality education’. It aims to ensure inclusive equitable and quality education for all, including technical and vocational training by providing lifelong learning opportunities so as to achieve substantial adult literacy and numeracy,” the official added.

Stating that Tamil Nadu e-governance agency has planned to launch a dashboard to indicate the performance of the State, he said the proportion of male and female students at the State and district levels enrolled in engineering and polytechnic colleges for the academic year 2019-20 would be uploaded. “The gross enrolment ratio was increased to 49 this year compared to 44.3 in 2015-16,” he said, and added that the State had set a target to increase it to 60 by 2030.

The official said that the directorate has instructed all principals to take necessary steps to achieve the target and to submit action-taken report before this December. “All institutions have been asked to submit yearly growth target and what all measures were undertaken to achieve it,” he said.
