In Vellore, AIADMK, AMMK close to clash

The commemoration of the death anniversary of former chief minister MG Ramachandran on Tuesday turned out to be a lack lustre effort in Vellore as party workers failed to turn up in large numbers. Moreover, the AIADMK and AMMK men came to close to a tussle while garlanding the leader’s statue.

When the AIADMK functionaries went to garland the MGR statute in the old municipal office, they found the entrance blocked by six cars belonging to AMMK men, who had also come there. It was only after that some senior hands raised their voices and pulled up the police that the AMMK workers removed their cars allowing the AIADMK functionaries, including former minister VS Vijay and district treasurer M Moorthy to garland the statue.


While the norm is for each regional secretary to garland MGR’s pictures put up at vantage points, this time around, six regions joined together to do the honours and there were less than 50 workers, a party functionary bemoaned.


Meanwhile in Puducherry, floral tributes were paid to MGR. Assembly Speaker Sivakozhunthu garlanded the MGR statue.AIADMK legislature party leader A Anbazhagan and MLA Vayyapuri Manikandan and other party functionaries took out a silent procession, while MlA Om Sakthi Sekhar also garlanded the statue of MGR.
