Addressing a protest against the CAA organised by his party at Chepauk here on Monday, he said that CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury would move the SC against the CAA 2019. “The protest against the CAA has become a nationwide movement. All the political parties have come together keeping aside their differences in Kerala and Tamil Nadu to protest against the Act which seeks to differentiate the people on the basis of religion. The fire that was lit here today will soon engulf the divisive communal agenda of the RSS-BJP that is ruling the country,” Balakrishnan said.

Pointing to the Delhi police’s brutal attack on the students of Jamia Millia Islamia University, he called upon the students in Tamil Nadu to come out in large numbers to protest against the police brutality and the CAA. “All the political parties in the state will extend support to the students,” he said, hitting out at the Edappadi K Palaniswami government of behaving like a slave to the ruling BJP at the Centre.

“The AIADMK has betrayed Tamils by voting in favour of the amendment bill in the Parliament which denied the citizenship for Sri Lankan Tamil refugees,” he said, declared that even though the AIADMK government is in power, they would not let the government enforce CAA.

DMK organising secretary RS Bharathi condemned the BJP government for dividing the people on religious lines. He noted that Sri Lankan Tamil refugees arrived in Tamil Nadu after witnessing religious persecution in their country. “But they were being denied citizenship,” he said.

CPI state secretary R Mutharasan also took a swipe at the AIADMK and its allies, including the PMK for voting in support of the Citizenship Amendment Bill even though it left the Lankan Tamils in the lurch.

Manithaneya Makkal Katchi president Prof MH Jawahirullah said that the AIADMK and PMK have betrayed the Tamils by voting in support of the CAA. “I had written to all the parties that have representation in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabah to vote against the amendment. But the AIADMK and the PMK supported it despite it went against the Lankan Tamils,” he noted.
