All schools in TN to be subjected to surprise inspections regularly
Now, all the schools, including private institutions, across Tamil Nadu will be subjected to surprise and instant inspections on regular basis. No prior information to the management of the schools would be provided of the inspection.

The Directorate of School Education’s move to conduct sudden inspections came against the backdrop of several complaints that many schools, especially private institutions, were well prepared to give false data after intimation about the inspection of officials.
At present 37,500 government schools, 8,357 government aided schools and 12,918 private institutions are functioning across the state and teaching about 1.3 crore students.
“We have received complaints from parents that certain schools were involved in hiding several inadequacies, especially during inspections conducted by the education officials, since the school management were given prior information about it,” a senior official from the School Education Department told DT Next.
According to the official, many schools, especially private institutions, have been indulging in malpractices such as charging extra fees from the parents like smart class fees, taxing students by conducting extensive special classes even after school hours for improving annual exam results and not providing infrastructure facilities for the students.
In government and government aided schools, the official said many teachers were found absent without valid reasons, improper implementation of welfare schemes for the students and shabby maintenance of the school premises.
“There were also reports that in certain state-run schools it was found that under the midday meal scheme, food was not served properly to the students,” he claimed.
“Therefore, a separate team comprising zonal level education officers as members will be deployed in all the districts to conduct surprise inspections and would make sure that the information on the inspection is not leaked to the management of the institution,” he said adding, “the team will be directly reporting to the district education officer, who in turn will pass on the information to the school directorate of the wrong doings if any.”
DOTE digitalises re-admission for polytechnics, issues new norms
Lakhs of polytechnic students in the state seeking re-admission, continuation of study and institution transfer will have to follow certain procedures as the Directorate of Technical Education (DOTE) has brought fresh guidelines for the same.
In addition, the DOTE has also developed an online process for the students, who seek re-admission, continuation of study or institution transfer.
A senior official from the DOTE said now, students, who seek re-admission or continuation of study or institution transfer, should fall under certain categories, laid by the directorate with immediate effect.
Accordingly, students who have discontinued their studies in the previous year due to shortage of attendance alone could get re-admission.
For those seeking continuation of study, the DOTE official said students who had paid the board exam fee, received hall ticket and did not appear for even one subject in the previous exam due to hospitalisation alone can apply for continuation of study in the next semester. This facility would be available only once during the course time.
The official said transfer from one institution to another will be permitted in the beginning of the academic year from third semester only. “However, transfer requests will be considered even after fifth semester for genuine case like transfer of workplace for parents and health condition of students based on valid proof only.
Stating that transfer request from government polytechnic college to another government college or government aided institution and vice-versa alone will be accepted, the official said, and clarified, “transfer request from government and government aided college to self-financing institution will not be accepted.”
However, students studying in self-supporting courses conducted by government aided polytechnic colleges could apply for transfer to other self-financing college, he said adding transfer request will be approved only based on the availability of vacancy in the institution to which transfer is sought. “A circular on the new guidelines has been issued to all the 517 polytechnic colleges in this regard,” he added.
