In order to increase the safety of the people, Kumbakonam police on Tuesday installed as many as 100 CCTV cameras across the town, taking the total number of CCTV cameras to 240.


Speaking to reporters after inaugurating the CCTV surveillance, Thanajvur Range DIG J Loganathan said it is high time the police needed the third eye to prevent crime occurrences, arrest the culprits and regulate the traffic. “With the installation of 100 CCTV cameras on Phase II, the entire Kumbakonam town has been under monitoring by the police,” he said.


Stating that already 140 CCTV cameras had been installed across the town with the support of City Union Bank, the DIG said that an addition of 100 CCTV cameras were installed and speakers were also installed in as many as 120 public places to regulate the crowd from the control room.


“With the support of the cameras and the speakers, the crime rate in the town has come down remarkably,” the DIG claimed.


Meanwhile, the DIG said that steps have been initiated to increase the number of CCTV cameras at Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Muthupettai and Tiruthuraipoondi areas.


“This apart, the cameras would be installed at ECR and all the check-posts. Steps are being taken to install cameras at all the schools and colleges, private and government buses so that there would not be any offence,” the DIG said.


Appealing to the public to download and utilise the ‘Kavalan’ mobile App, the DIG said that the people are given awareness by the Police Department on the features and help by the App.


Meanwhile, cases under helmetless ride haves been registered in the entire range regularly. There are 1.2 lakh cases registered in Thanjavur while it was one lakh each in Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts.
