The apex court, in its order, said that local body polls in the newly created districts should be conducted only after completing all the delimitation process as per the rule.

The SC also ruled that the state government should hold the local body elections in the nine districts within four months after completing the delimitation formalities.

“It is a historic judgment that will uphold democracy,” he said. Once again claiming that DMK did not move the SC to stall the elections, Stalin said his party moved the court only to ensure that proper delimitation exercise was carried out before going to polls.

Demanding the AIADMK government to act as per the SC ruling at least by now, Stalin said his party is ready to face the elections at any time.

“The ruling AIADMK, which is only afraid of facing local body polls, was waiting that the elections would be stalled through court,” he said adding that the SC also asked several questions.

Pointing out that it was not the duty of SEC to announce the reservation in the polls, the DMK leader said, “it can only carry out delimitation process and it was up to the state to declare the quota for women and SC/ST.”

DMK to convene districtsecretaries meeting on Sunday

As the SEC is likely to announced the revised dates for the local body polls, the Opposition DMK also announced that it would convene its party’s district secretaries meeting on Sunday. DMK general secretary

K Anbazhagan in a communique said apart from the party’s district secretaries, all the DMK MPs and MLAs were asked to participate in the meeting, which will be headed by DMKpresident MK Stalin. Stating that the meeting would take place in a city hotel, Anbazhagan said civic poll strategies will be discussed.
