A team, led by the two officials, visited Nadur village and held discussions with the residents. Speaking to media, Murugan said that the commission suo motto took up the issue to ascertain whether the wall was constructed to discriminate Dalits.

The state government had announced a solatium of Rs 10 lakh to the bereaved families. “Of that, only Rs 4 lakh has been given. Officials have been asked to give away the remaining Rs 6 lakh soon to the victim’s family,” he said. Further, the commission directed the government to give jobs to one member of the affected family within a week.

Murugan also said that the district administration has been asked to issue a memo to officials for failing to inspect the wall and take action despite complaints by various organisations and local residents on its danger.

The commission urged the authorities to book the house owner under SC/ST Act. It also sought to release those arrested for protest following the wall collapse incident, which resulted in the death of 17 persons.
