TN wins award for giving maximum loans to diffabled

The state on Tuesday received an award for maximum disbursal of funds for differently abled by Cooperative banks from Union Department of Social Welfare and Empowerment.

The award was conferred by Vice President Venkiah Naidu and was received by Minister for Cooperation Sellur K Raju, in a function held at Delhi. This is the second time that the state is receiving award for maximum disbursal of funds for differently-abled provided by Cooperative banks. The state received the award for the first time in 2014.


The award titled ‘Award for best channelising agency of National Handicapped and Finance Development Corporation’ was given to Central Cooperative Bank for ‘Empowerment of persons with disabilities.’


After receiving the award, Sellur Raju, while addressing reporters, said, “The scheme of providing loans for differently-abled persons was commenced by the late chief minister J Jayalalithaa in 2001 and in 2012-13, the government headed by her announced that the state will bear the interests of loans obtained by differently-abled persons.”


He also said that Tamil Nadu stood as example for other states in wavering interests for loans for differently-abled persons and credited the award for Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami.


He further said that state government has disbursed more than Rs 40 crore for differently-abled, last year, and it is a record when compared to other states.
