Ramnad experiences moderate rain, 52 houses damaged

Stagnant rain water from low-lying areas were let into 24 water bodies in parts of the district, Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao said.

On rain-related damage, he said a total of 52 houses, including 44 partially-destroyed, were reported over the last two days. All those houses damaged were kutcha houses.

Two cattle loss were also reported. A total of 232 people were being accommodated in three relief shelters in Keelakarai taluk. Since they found it hard to access rain-inundated houses, the inmates were taken to safer places. Further, he said the district would most probably surpass average annual rainfall data of 827 mm. However, it has surpassed the rainfall record in this northeast monsoon season since October. With the copious flow of rain, most of the water bodies were filled, the Collector said.

In Thoothukudi district, a total of 52 water-logging areas, including 31 under Corporation limits, have been identified. With the aid of high-powered motors hired from Madurai, other municipalities and private bodies, stagnant water in parts of Tiruchendur, Sathankulam and Kayalpattinam wase being drained out into kanmois and sea.

Since there’s groundwater seepage in Thoothukudi Corporation limits, it would take two more days to dry, Collector Sandeep Nanduri said. However, there’s no rainfall on Monday, he said.
