The delta districts, including Tiruchirapalli, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, Cuddalore besides Ariyalur have been experiencing heavy rainfall since Friday.

The standing samba paddy crops raised on thousands of acres lay inundated in these districts, particularly Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam causing concern to the farmers.

Heavy rains continued to pound Southern districts of Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari, Ramanathapuram, Theni and Dindigul.

Over 20 mechanized fishing boats anchored at Mandapam and Rameswaram fishing jetties in Ramanathapuram district were damaged as they collided with each other following gusty winds. The fisher of several hamlets in Ramanathapuram, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts refrained from venturing into the sea following an advisory from the meteorological department.

According to reports, trains could not enter or exit the Thoothukudi railway station following flooding of three platforms several hours today. The rain has also disrupted the movement of goods trains carrying coal and port goods to Thoothukudi.

Sathankulam recorded a maximum rainfall of 18.6 cm, followed by Thoothukudi and Thalaignayiru each 16 cm, Manimutharu 15 cm, Kulasekarapatttinam 14 cm, Tiruchendur 10 cm, Ambasamudram 9.5 cm, Palayamkottai 8 cm and Radhapuram 4.8 cm.

People living in low-lying areas close to the Thamirabarani River were advised not enter the river for bathing, as the river was in spate following heavy discharge from Papanasam dam.

The districts administrations have been advised to remain vigil in view of heavy rainfall forecast across Tamil Nadu for the next two days.

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will receive rains in the next few days, predicted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) here on Sunday.

"Due to low atmospheric pressure, there will be heavy and moderate rain in almost all the districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry," said N Puviarasan, Director, IMD Chennai.

The IMD official has also urged fishermen not to venture into the sea near Kanyakumari sea, Maldives and Lakshadweep for the next couple of days.

Puviarasan also told ANI that since October 1, Tamil Nadu has received 39 cm rain, which is 3 cm higher than the seasonal rainfall.
