The state government had taken initiative to enable students to go for professional courses, including concession to first-generation graduate students admitted in first year and direct admissions into second year in all the engineering colleges in the state.

Accordingly, students, who get engineering seats in government colleges will be allocated Rs 2,000 each per year and candidates in government aided college receive Rs 4,000 each. Students in self-financing colleges, which comes under Anna University will get Rs 15,000 per year.

A senior official from the Higher Education Department told DT Next that under the scheme, the government will be spending about Rs 400 crore per year. “Financial assistance to economically weaker students studying in B.E and B.Tech through Chief Minister Relief Fund has been restricted only to the candidates who got admissions through counselling,” he added.

The official said that the government’s new move on the student’s financial assistance scheme comes as the funds should reach the right beneficiaries. “Of the total candidates who got admitted this financial year, about 20 per cent are from poor economical background,” he added.

“All the college managements were asked to put a detail note on the scheme on their notice boards so that the students would avail it,” he added.

The official also pointed out that the financial assistance for the students have been enhanced to 50 per cent from this year according to the available fees structure in the government and government engineering colleges besides self-financing institutions.
