Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Friday formally inaugurated the commencement of the administrative activities of the newly formed Tenkasi district bifurcating Tirunelveli district. The AIADMK government, which is on a spree will be declaring open four more new districts of Chengalpet, Kallakurichi, Tirupathur and Ranipettai within this month.

Chief Minister Palaniswami in his inaugural address took a dig at the opposition DMK explaining that the formation of new districts has nothing to do with the upcoming local bodies elections.

“The Opposition is trying to stall the conduct of local body polls, but the civic elections will be held soon in the state. Few people were attempting to stop the civic polls, but the government would overcome the obstacles and hold the elections for the welfare of public,” the Chief Minister said.

The AIADMK alliance will emerge victorious repeating the success tasted in the Assembly bypolls and the Opposition DMK alliance will slowly vanish after the civic polls, the AIADMK leader said.

The objective of forming new districts is to improve the administrative efficiency and help public to easily access government welfare schemes. Palaniswami also laid foundation stone for an integrated collectorate complex, housing the district police office in a 50-acre land at Aayiraperi.

“The Amma’s government run by the AIADMK is the one that delivers. The announcements made on the floor of the Assembly are now being executed one after another. The AIADMK government is focussed on implementing the announcements,” Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam said. State Ministers and senior officials attended the inaugural ceremony leaving the Fort St George housing state secretariat almost deserted.

Being the 33rd district of Tamil Nadu, Tenkasi will have two revenue divisions namely Tenkasi and Sankarankoil with eight subdivided taluks. Tenkasi, Sankarankoil, Sivagiri, Alangulam, Thiruvenkadam, Sengottai, Kadayanallur and Veerakeralampudur will have taluk offices. The district will have five Assembly constituencies comprising Alangulam, Tenkasi, Kadayanallur, Vasudevanallur and Sankarankoil.
