L-G hails Centre’s decision to open CBI branch in Pondy
Welcoming the decision of the Union Government to establish a branch office of the CBI in Puducherry, Lt Governor Kiran Bedi on Friday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Personnel Dr Jatinder Singh and CBI Director Rishi Kumar Shukla.

Welcoming the decision of the Union Government to establish a branch office of the CBI in Puducherry, Lt Governor Kiran Bedi on Friday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Personnel Dr Jatinder Singh and CBI Director Rishi Kumar Shukla.
In a WhatsApp message here in the evening, Bedi said ‘’now the people of Puducherry with evidence in hand will be able to approach the CBI office directly’’.
It is hoped that the presence of a CBI branch office will instil hope in the minds of the people that they will have an independent agency to investigate, she said.
The Lt Governor said Puducherry has been a victim of corruption in areas of land-grabbing, civil construction, contracts, registration, appointments and more.
Presence of the CBI office shall act as check on corrupt elements, she added.
Puducherry was desperately in need of such a presence and it has not come a day late, the Lt Governor said, adding that now the CBI presence could lay traps and catch the corrupt red-handed.
Recalling the medical admission case, the Lt Governor pointed out how the hapless students and their parents had to repeatedly drive down to Chennai to give evidences.
Bedi had requested the Union Government to set up a branch office of the CBI in Puducherry at the Governors’ conference held in 2017.
