The executive council of the TNCC on Monday met under the leadership of its state president KS Alagiri and resolved to commence preliminary works to identify candidates for the civic polls. A resolution adopted at the executive council to this effect said there is a possibility of civic polls being conducted in the end of December and instructed its district units to immediately hold consultations in this regard.

The TNCC executive council also asked the district Congress committee presidents to begin the process of identifying candidates for civic posts in panchayat limits where election would be held on a non-party basis. The resolution also instructs the district chiefs to send to the TNCC a list of candidates shortlisted for panchayat level posts.

Another resolution adopted in the meeting advised the district Congress presidents to make elaborate arrangements for the 10-day statewide campaign against the economic mismanagement of the ruling BJP. The protest demonstration would be held at some place in a district every day from November 5 to 15. The campaign would be wound up with a massive demonstration at the district headquarters.

Drawing a parallel between the economic crisis of the present and 1990, the TNCC resolution said the Reserve Bank of India, which had mortgaged gold abroad to overcome the economic stagnation then, has now offered to sell it in the open market now, which was testimony to the extent the country’s economy has plummeted.
