Triple talaq during honeymoon, man booked
Coimbatore city police on Wednesday booked a 32-year-old man for allegedly divorcing his wife by declaring triple talaq.

Coimbatore
This is likely to be the first case booked against someone in Coimbatore for pronouncing triple talaq.
According to the police, M Mohammed Ali, a resident of KK Street near Annur, got married to a 24-year-old woman from Amman Nagar in Podanur in July this year. Soon after the marriage, Mohammed and his family members began to torture his wife demanding dowry.
“The girl’s family had given 40 sovereigns as dowry at the time of marriage, while the groom’s family demanded 80 sovereigns. As she was unable to bring the remaining jewels, Mohammed Ali and her in-laws harassed her and treated her badly,” the police said.
Within three days of the marriage, Mohammed Ali had pronounced triple talaq during their honeymoon trip to Kerala. “He also showed the photo of another woman and expressed his desire to marry her,” the police said.
In July, 2019, the union government declared the practice of triple talaq as illegal, unconstitutional and punishable with upto three years in jail. Even as futile efforts were taken by the complainant’s family to reunite the couple, Mohammed Ali had again sent a divorce notice in September.
Based on a complaint, the Podanur police registered a case against Mohammed Ali and six of his family members. The police said Ali has been booked under Sections 3 (any pronouncement of talaq by a Muslim husband upon his wife, by words, either spoken or written or in electronic form or in any other manner whatsoever, shall be void and illegal) read with 4 (any Muslim husband who pronounces talaq upon his wife shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years, and shall also be liable to fine) of the 2019 Act, while his relatives were booked under Section 498 A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjectingher to cruelty).
