According to officials, the issue stemmed from a case where a couple, Srinivasan and wife Jayalakshmi, of Valayampattai village near Vaniyambadi, moved the Vellore chief judicial magistrate’s court demanding a hike in the Rs 42 lakh compensation that was promised by the district administration subsequent to the handing over of their 2.50-acre land to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for the construction of the Vellore-Bengaluru national highway in 2003.

Increasing the compensation amount to Rs 5 crore, the court had ordered the district administration here to pay the amount to the couple and when it failed to do so, the court ordered for the Collector’s car to be impounded in 2017.

Upon information of the arrival of court officials, subordinate staff allegedly hid the vehicles of the Collector and the DRO. With court officials unable to locate the vehicles, they left the premises reportedly stating to return with police protection to implement the court order.
