Chief Minister conferred honorary doctorate
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami received honorary doctorate (Doctor of Letters) from Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute, Chennai, at the 28th convocation function of the university on Sunday.

“The doctorate has increased my responsibility,” said Palaniswami, after receiving the honorary doctorate from the Chancellor of the University, AC Shanmugam, who was also the AIADMK candidate for Vellore constituency in the recently-conducted Lok Sabha election.
He also said that Tamil Nadu is one of the forerunners in providing education. “The state government with an aim to provide education outside the books has introduced new education syllabus till Plus 2. The state has allotted arecord Rs 28,957.62 crore for the SchoolEducation Department in the 2019-20 budget,” said the Chief Minister.
He further said that as far as higher education is concerned Tamil Nadu is the leader. “Tamil Nadu has the highest enrolment in higher education with 49 percentage and Rs 4,584.21 crore had been allotted to the Higher Education Department for the year 2019-20,” said the Chief Minister.
Speaking about higher education, the Chief Minister said that former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa opened several colleges with the intention to increase the enrolment in higher education to 50 percentage. “Jayalalithaa inaugurated 65 colleges during her tenure and following her, the present ruling government had inaugurated 12 government arts and science colleges, five polytechnic colleges and six law colleges in the last three years in Villupuram, Dharmapuri, Ramanathapuram, Salem, Namakkal and Theni,” said the Chief Minister.
The state government has applied forsix new medical colleges in the state and once the Centre gives permission, they will also be setup in the state.
