Pacemaker fixed on 52-yr-old farm worker
Tiruchy Medical College Hospital doctors successfully fixed a pacemaker on a 52-year-old patient for the first time in the history of the hospital here on Saturday.

Jamal Mohammed, a farmer and resident of Palakkarai in Tiruchy, was ailing from cardiac problems and he required a pacemaker immediately for survival. Subsequently, he was admitted to the Tiruchy GH, where a team of doctors, including Balasubramani, S Manivel and M Ashok, conducted the surgery very successfully.
According to the doctors, the pacemaker costs Rs 55,000 which would have cost Rs 1.5 lakh in a private hospital. “We have conducted this surgery for the first time and it has been functioning smoothly. We have done this under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Care Scheme and the patient has been showing improvement.”
District Collector S Sivarasu, who inspected the GH, visited Jamal Mohammed and later took a round of the inpatient and dengue wards.
While speaking to reporters, Dr Arishya Begum, Dean (incharge), said so far 230 persons have been found to be infected with dengue. “During the last 15 days, 32 people have been admitted to the hospital with the symptoms of dengue, among whom five are undergoing treatment at the GH,” he clarified.
