Immolation bid of cable TV operator foiled in Vellore

According to the police, the operator Sasikumar (36), son of Loganathan of Nellorepet in Gudiyattam, came to the office with a five-litre petrol can. While he was in the office, he suddenly started pouring the flammable liquid on him and very soon tried to set himself alight.

The staff who were present and the lone security guard immediately wrested the can away from him and poured water on him. Even while the staff were pouring water, Sasikumar attempted to pour the petrol on him again. The officials then called the Sathuvachari police who rushed to the spot. A case has been registered and Sasikumar was taken for questioning.

When asked police said that Sasikumar was aggrieved that no action was taken on his repeated plea to act against an operator who refused to hand over cable TV connections to him in the same area. Sasikumar had handed over connections to 200 houses to a colleague on condition that government set top boxes be provided. But the latter provided private channel boxes resulting in the bill from the channels coming to Sasikumar as the connections were in his name.

As officials failed to act on his plea he tried to kill himself, Sasikumar was quoted by the police. Investigations are underway.
