DGP, Chief Secretary inspect security at Mahabalipuram

A day after Chinese officials visited Mahabalipuram to inspect the security arrangements ahead of the Indo-China Summit at the popular tourist site, DGP J K Tripathy and Chief Secretary K Shanmugam visited the town on Saturday.

“The DGP and the Secretary along with police officers and other officials arrived at Mahabalipuram around 9 am and started the inspection at the venue and the route to be taken by the dignitaries. The leaders are likely to make a visit to the ancient monuments in the coastal town,” said a police officer.

The officials inspected Krishna’s Butter Ball, Pancha Rathas, Shore Temple and other sites. The inspection went on till 11 am after which the DGP and Chief Secretary held a meeting with the police officers and other government officials.

While as many as 10,000 police personnel are expected to be deployed in Mamallapuram, officials have also decided to bring the entire town under CCTV surveillance and use drones to monitor the coastline. “Surprise raids at lodges and houses have been intensified to ensure that suspicious persons are not stationed at the tourist spot,” said police.

It may be noted that a Nigerian and a Sri Lankan national who were overstaying in the city were nabbed. The second India-China informal summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, is scheduled in October this year.
