As per schedule, the Nanguneri constituency goes to the by-polls on October 21. The by-poll was necessitated after the constituency fell vacant following the resignation of H. A total of 299 polling booths would be readied for the polling, Tirunelveli Collector and District Election Officer Shilpa Prabhakar Satish told reporters on Saturday.

A total of 719 ballot units, 589 control units and 585 VVPATs are available. Based on nominations filed, decision would be taken whether to increase the availability of ballot units. The constituency has a total electorate of 2, 56,414, including 1, 27,025 men, 1, 29,385 women and four others as per the draft electoral roll released on January 1, 2019. The electoral verification programme is underway and any addition or deletion of names in the electoral roll could be done until the last date of nomination filing on September 30.

The eligible voters could access online verification or through voter helpline app to check whether their names were included in the list. Booth-level officers could also be contacted to check in this regard. Flying squad team, static surveillance team and video surveillance and viewing team would be on alert to prevent any irregularity or violation of model code of conduct. M. Nateshan, District Supply Officer (DSO), has been deputed as Returning Officer for the by-poll. The filing of nomination papers is scheduled to commence on September 23 and candidates could either file their nominations before Returning Officer or Primary ARO at Nanguneri taluk office from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the collector said.

Tirunelveli Superintendent of Police P. Arun Sakthi Kumar, said out of 299 polling booths, seven were under Tirunelveli city limits. Under four police sub divisions, 28 booths were located in Cheranmahadevi, 195 in Nanguneri, 54 in Thalaiyuthu Rural and 15 in Valliur, the SP said.
