The kudimaramathu project that was introduced for reviving waterbodies with the participation of the local ayacutars of villages has borne fruit at Marungikulam. The Marungikulam lake, which was once a water source for more than 350 acres of land getting irrigated in the region, now witnesses people working at the waterbody after a decade.

“There are 88 kudimaramathu words being undertaken to the tune of Rs 11.72 crore and as many as 64 of them have been completed. Only the civil works are being carried out and other works have been completed,” said District Collector S Sivarasu.

He further said the public’s contribution to the total restoration costs was spent by the Marungikulam Irrigation Ayacutdars Association which took care of the kudimaramathu works in Marugapuri.

The Collector said the strengthening of the walls to the length of 1417 metre length and the laying of concrete which has concluded could now help store water to a measurement of 3.75 sq metre which would irrigate around 350 acres of land. “Only the civil works are to be completed and the entire works would be completed before the monsoon,” the officials said.

While thanking the initiative of the State government, Jothi Venkatachalam, the village head, said that the entire waterbody was left abandoned in the past decade. As the district witnessed drought-like condition for several years, the desilting work was believed to be without meaning, Venkatachalam said. “Now, the works which has been held with the contribution of 10 per cent of the total cost has come to a shape and the pond would get rejuvenated with efforts of the public,”he added.
