Build TNSCB units as per norms: Subramanian

Pointing out that the late DMK president and former Chief Minister, M Karunanidhi, during his time at the helm of affairs in the State had constructed the slum clearance quarters, Subramanian on Friday said that it was inaugurated in 1975.

Stating that after becoming the CM in 2006, Karunanidhi had decided to reconstruct all the slum clearance buildings as it was more than 30 years old, the DMK MLA added that it was also decided that all the new houses will be constructed at the same place. As a result, six housing blocks each in Kotturpuram, Rani Anna Nagar, Vyasarpadi and Perambur were constructed and given to the beneficiaries, he added.

Claiming that no new houses were re-constructed by demolishing the existing ones in the past nine years, Subramanian said, “It is now learnt that the Slum Clearance Board is planning to demolish the existing three-floor buildings and construct 14 floor houses”.

Mentioning the spot in Kotturpuram as getting affected during every rainy season, the DMK MLA said, “At this juncture, it is not the right choice to demolish 1,476 housing quarters and construct 2,975 new houses as people will be affected during power cuts and floods”. Hence, it is advisable to have four-storeyed complexes constructed as in the DMK regime, he added.
