A Corporation official said, “We have already earmarked Rs 233 crore to construct railway bridges and subways at five locations that fall under our jurisdiction. Once the railway completes their works, we will start ours.”
According to him, the new bridges, with the civic body’s contribution would come at Elephant Gate level crossing, Villivakkam level crossing, Korukkupet 2A and 2B level crossings, and a subway would be constructed at Bojarajan Nagar level crossing near Royapuram.
The official added that the work order has been issued for the Villivakkam railway bridge and preliminary works are under process. “There has been a delay in beginning construction at 2A and 2B level crossings in Korukkupet as we could not get permission from the traffic police. To ease the traffic during the construction works, we have laid a road on an alternative route. Traffic police inspected the road on Wednesday, we are expecting the approval in a few days,” he said.
The civic body has also been waiting for the Southern Railway to start its portion of work at Elephant Gate and Bojarajan Nagar level crossings. Once the railway starts works, the civic body would float tenders as the estimations have already been prepared, said the official.
Explaining the need for the new bridge at Elephant Gate level crossing, the official said that the existing bridge is weak, and the railway has to demolish it and construct a new one. As the Elephant Gate bridge was closed, vehicles are being diverted towards Basin Bridge. The Corporation official said, “We have plans to build another rail over bridge at Basin Bridge level crossing before demolishing the old bridge. After that, another new bridge will be constructed. Basin Bridge level crossing will have two bridges.
