According to sources, the deceased victim, identified as Karuppaiah of Devadanam, was a relative of Tenkasi MP Dhanush M. Kumar and was working in a fair price shop meant for distribution of essential commodities through public distribution system.

Virudhunagar Superintendent of Po¬lice M. Rajarajan, who inspected the scene of crime at Devadanam village near Rajapalayam under the limits of Seithur police, said the recent murder occurred over a trivial issue during a local temple festival on July 10. Karuppaiah had scolded a group of people, who were allegedly drunk, and chased them away after reportedly assaulting them.

Taking revenge, four people were suspected to have followed Karuppaiah and then hacked him to death on Tuesday. The body was taken to the Rajapalayam government hospital for post mortem.
