In the meeting chaired by the association state president, P Viswanathan, several participants from different areas pointed out that Electricity Minister P Thangamani earlier promised on the floor of the Assembly that 40,000 free power supply connections would be given to farmers across the State in the year 2019-20.

Based on his announcement, thousands of farmers, who applied seeking power connection to their agricultural requirements, were yet to get the service.

“Those who have been waiting for years, should be given the connection on seniority basis. If they are not given priority, then the association will approach the TANGEDCO divisional offices for the free power supply and if they are asked to wait for some more time, a series of protests will be staged,” the meeting warned.

Viswanathan also said that a large number of farmers from districts like Tiruchy, Karur, Thanajvur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Pudukkottai were waiting for the power connection. Tangedco officials have been refusing to provide the connection citing various issues. “We will once again approach the officials in the divisional offices. If they still delay, we will commence an indefinite protest across the State until our demands are addressed,” the participants said.
