A major mishap was averted in Salem district on Wednesday after the loco pilot of a passenger train bound to Bengaluru from Karaikal sensed an unusually loud noise from the tracks, only to find the track’s fastener clips broken. It was later learnt that at least 40 Pandrol clips were missing on the track stretch, even triggering fears of a terrorist attempt to derail trains.

The Pandrol clips, which hold the railway tracks with the concrete sleepers over which the track runs, were found broken for nearly half-a-kilometre stretch near Attur in Salem district.

On reaching the Attur railway station, the loco pilot of the passenger train who discovered the broken clips en route, alerted senior railway officials, who then rushed to the spot and held inquiries.

The Q-branch police too joined the investigations to find out if it was an attempt by terrorists to derail trains in the wake of a terrorist alert across Tamil Nadu.

Trains plying the Salem-Chennai, Salem-Virudhachalam and Karaikal-Bengaluru routes pass the above mentioned section of the railway stretch. Preliminary inquiries revealed that some villagers from Kattukottai village had consumed liquor along the railway track. Hence, police suspect that villagers might have stolen the Pandrol clips worth aroundRs 18,000.

New fastener clips were thereafter fixed on the half-kilometre track stretch on a war footing and trains were operated as usual, but at lower speeds on the particular stretch. Furtherinvestigations are on.
