Umbrella tree or Screw pine or pandanus trees (Pandanus Odoratissimus) protects Rameshwaram Islands from natural disasters like tsunami. The trees are seen in thick cluster From Kunthukal beach to Nambunayagi Amman Koil, along the road that leads to Mugamathiyarpuram, Thangachimadam, Rameshwaram, Dhanushkodi.

"This tree protects the place from tsunami and guards it like a citadel. There are two types of trees, male and female. The Female tree bears fruit whereas the Male tree has flowers(the pandanus flower). This flower is used during rituals in the local temples. The rumour that snakes come following the flowers' scent is false. They come for the cool shade provided by the tree", says the Forest Officer.

A resident of Kunthukal commented regarding the tree's importance. He said that during the flowering season, many come to pick the flowers. He also said that many trees are burnt or cut down. So, he requested the Forest Officers to protect the existing trees and plant more trees along the coastlines.

It is noteworthy that Rameshwaram islands were not affected during tsunami.
