“We used a sniffer dog on Tuesday to search for the body of Shynudeen trapped in a land slip. But we couldn’t find him anywhere. So we have again resumed search operations by using machineries on Wednesday and yet the search is still on,” said an official involved in the search operations.

A joint team involving revenue, fire and service and disaster management team have taken up the labourious task of finding the body. Forty-seven-year old Shynudeen, a tea estate labourer from Ellamalai, was going by walk on the Gudalur-Ellamalai Road, when he came under a large pile of mud in an unexpected landslip on the evening of August 8.

Almost a week has gone, but all efforts to trace the missing person have gone futile. For the last one week the search operations were carried out using machineries. “Everyday large quantity of mud is being scooped out from the mound in search of the missing person, but so far we couldn’t find him out. The search operation’s which begins everyday in the morning is suspended by evening once dark falls,” said the official.

A large number of staff roped in from different departments has been involved in the search operations.

Several areas in Gudalur have been affected by rains. Even as restoration works were underway on full swing, rain resumed with higher intensity again on Wednesday triggering fear among people.
