    Fisheries Univ working to set up techno park, incubation centres

    For facilitating organised research in frontier areas with an objective of developing cutting edge technologies in fisheries science, Tamil Nadu Dr J Jayalalithaa Fisheries University (TNJFU) has taken up about 20 key projects including establishment of high-tech fisheries techno park cum fish processing technology business incubation centre.

    A senior official from TNJFU told DT Next that the Director of Research along with the Centre and State Fisheries Institutions are working to research various fisheries programmes. The official said that a fish and shellfish health certification and disease surveillance laboratories in Tamil Nadu would be set up to enhance aquaculture production.


    A National Aquatic Rainbow Mall (NAQRAM) would promote incredible Indian ornamental fish trade through one stop shopping at Madhavaram soon.


    Stating that the institutional research grants have been obtained to the tune of Rs 34.45 crore from various agencies including NABARD, the TNJFU official said that a Fisheries Training Institute at Mandapam, Ramanathapuram district would be set up on par with international standards. “Cage fishing in open sea at Ramanathapuram coast will be expanded,” he said adding research project on management and rehabilitation of coastal habitats, and biodiversity for climate change of adaption and sustainable livelihood in Gulf of Mannar, would also be taken. According to the official, the University signed 26 MoUs with many industries, including US-based Kemin Industries and Germany-headquartered BASF for bringing research grants.
