662 Corpn bldgs start generating solar energy
The Greater Chennai Corporation has installed solar panels on its 662 buildings, including offices, schools, hospitals, to save on electricity bill.
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami inaugurated the project that was completed under Smart City Mission at a cost of Rs 24.30 crore.
The solar panels, with a total capacity of 3.064 MW, would produce 12,000 to 13,000 units of electricity per day. “The solar panels will save Rs 3 crore per year on electricity bill and 13 per cent of power requirement in Corporation offices will be met with it,” an official said.
Earlier, the civic body had conducted a survey at more than 2,000 Corporation buildings and identified 1,378 to install solar panels. It selected 662 buildings during the first phase and remaining are expected to be taken up in future.
The project was completed in less than a year after the first panels were installed on Chennai Middle School in Kondithope. “Before installing the panels, we assessed their stability. They can withstand wind speed of 100 km per hour,” the official said.
After Tangedco provides net meters, the Corporation would send the power generated during holidays to the grid.
