Four years ago, Kasturi Munirathinam, who was trapped by her employer in Dubai and even had her left hand severed, never expected to be freed but for efforts taken by former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

On Wednesday, Kasturi, from Moongileri, held a condolence meet in her village in memory of Swaraj and paid floral tributes to the departed leader. “Sushmaji not only rescued me, but took special care of me in hospital.” Recalling the harrowing experience, Kasturi said, “I was not given food, the promised wage and even the phone to speak to my family”. The news of Kasturi’s hands chopped being off had created furore across the country in 2015. Kasturi’s son, Mohan, from Moongileri village, Vellore, said, “When my grandmother died we wanted to inform my mother over phone but could not reach her. Finally, we managed to inform her through another person. When she asked for permission to come here, it was refused. When she tried to escape, her left hand was severed”.
The family immediately petitioned the Vellore Collector. With the help of BJP leader, Tamilisai Soundararajan, they had managed to inform Sushma. “We contacted her via e-mail and she immediately responded. It was then we started believing that my mother would be rescued. Not only did she return safe, but Sushmaji ensured that she got the best medical facilities even after she reached here”. More on P6
