TN makes Aadhaar enrolment must for school students
The Tamil Nadu government has made the Aadhaar card mandatory for students of government-run schools across the State. The School Education Department has instructed school managements provide Aadhaar cards with immediate effect to those who still don’t possess one.

All the Aadhaar information will be uploaded in the Educational Management Information System (EMIS), a database containing students’ and teachers’ details, besides a particular school’s profile.
A senior Directorate of School Education official told DT Next that Aadhaar card was not must during school admissions earlier as the UIDAI had emphasised that admission should not be denied on account of no Aadhaar cards.
“Many students, especially in rural areas do not have Aadhaar cards since it was not mandatory for them when they got admission. Now, they will be provided the cards,” he said.
Stating that at present, the EMIS database only has information pertaining to name, age, date of birth and address of the students, the official said the government’s step will ensure that the database is equipped with extra data such as photographs, fingerprints and retinal details.
The official said all school managements have been instructed to prepare a list of students who do not have Aadhaar cards.
“Once the list reaches the District Education Office, staff, who operate the device that would register Aadhaar details, will be sent to the schools for conducting special camps for Aadhaar registration,” he said, adding the special camps will be organised in the weekends so parents could bring their children to the schools without fail.
