Rape accused slips during police chase, injured
A day after the alleged rape of a student from NIT-Tiruchy by a man posing as a police officer, the accused, who tried to escape from the police by scaling a tower, slipped and sustained fractures to his leg and hand. The injured accused is undergoing treatment at the Thuvakudi government hospital in the district, sources said.

A day after the rape incident, the police was given a lead on the accused, Manikandan (32), by the boy friend of the victim.
A special team was then formed on the orders of the police commissioner to nab the suspect. The team which tracked the location of the accused, found that he was moving around Periyar Nagar near Valavanthankottai in Thuvakudi.
The police then took him to the Thuvakudi GH.
Meanwhile, the public felicitated the special team which had secured the accused within 24 hours of the incident.
According to members of the special team, they were provided with identification details of the vehicle the accused used and the colour of the dress he was wearing.
The police, while showing pictures of common suspects and history-sheeters to the victim, found out the accused to be Manikandan after she identified him.
Manikandan was on the list of the notorious history-sheeters and was reportedly involved in various earlier offences in Coimbatore and Tiruchy.
It may be noted that Ismail (43), who had reportedly attacked a head constable in Tiruchy on July 9, had allegedly slipped in the bathroom at the Ariyamangalam police station and sustained fracture in both the arms.
