While the accused has been arrested, the police rescued the girl and admitted her to the GH. Sources said that the victim, a B Tech student, studying III year, resident of Maharastra, has been staying at the hostel on the NIT, Tiruchy campus.
She was in love with a boy from Kalpakkam and the girl had reportedly left the hostel on August 1 without intimating the authorities concerned and went on a tour with the boy. Around 3 am on Sunday, the duo, who were under the influence of the alcohol, returned from the tour and were talking in front of the institute.
Suddenly a 30-year-old man, who claimed himself as a policeman, asked them to leave the place immediately. As both ignored him, the man reportedly assaulted the boy in which he sustained injuries and ran away from the spot.
Subsequently, the man asked the girl to sit on his bike saying that he would drop her at the hostel. Panicked by the assault on her friend, the girl without any resistance went with the man.
But, the impostor instead of riding to the hostel took the girl to a secluded place and reportedly sexually assaulted her, before fleeing the spot. Soon after the incident, the girl informed the torture meted out on her to her friends, who passed the information to the Thuvakudi police.
A police team arrived at the spot, secured the CCTV footage of the location. On investigation, the culprit was identified as Manikandan (30) against whom there were several cases pending and arrested him.
