Fishing activities hit in three coastal districts
Fishing operations remain suspended for the fourth consecutive day on Monday as the weather continued to be rough in the sea.
The entire fishing fleet in coastal districts of Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram and Kanniyakumari remain moored.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted wind velocity would be in the range of 40 to 50 kmph for the next 48 hours from Monday for the entire coast of Tamil Nadu.
Citing safety measures, permit tokens were not given by Fisheries Department in Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram districts.
Fishermen and coastal residents were advised to be cautious in the wake of high wind velocity in Kanniyakumari district.
The IMD also predicted that tidal waves up to a height of three to four metres would hit the coast.
While Ramanathapuram has a total fleet of 1,520 mechanized boats, it was around 1,200 in Kanniyakumari district and 450 in Thoothukudi.
Besides, several thousands of country crafts in these coastal districts also remained on the shores owing to rough weather.
