According to sources, Pavithra (22) from Anthanallur here was rushed to the local PHC after developing labour pain on Friday. Her pain soon intensified and Pavithra was to go into delivery. However, as there was reportedly no doctor available at the health centre then, the nurse found no other option but to initiate the process to help Pavithra deliver the child, sources said.

After a few minutes, Pavithra delivered a male baby but it reportedly developed complications with the respiratory system, and the nurse soon administered first aid. However, the baby died despite the efforts.

Irate relatives soon blaming poor medical treatment by the nurse and the non-availability of the doctors at the PHC for the death of the baby, staged a protest in front of the health centre on Saturday morning. Members from the CPM led by Anthanallur union secretary Vinod Mani too joined the protest.

On information, the Srirangam Tahsildar rushed to the spot and held talks with the agitating crowd. However, they did not heed to the negotiation talks by the Revenue officials.

Later, the District Maternal and Child Health Officer, Dr P Usha Ramani, arrived at the spot and engaged in peace talks with the crowd. The irate mob later dispersed after officials acceded to their demands, including action against the staff at the health centre.
