According to sources, Kalyanasundaram (35) of Mahajanakudi near Kumbakonam was working as a science teacher in a private school there. He handled classes for high school students, and was also a member of the disciplinary committee in the school.
On Thursday evening, when Kalyanasundaram came out of the school, he found a few students from Class 12 celebrating the birthday of one of their schoolmates and making noise and creating nuisance in the melee. When the teacher advised the students not to create a ruckus, the students refused to obey. They also abused Kalyanasundaram using foul words, sources said. The teacher still persisted and asked them to move away from the road, but soon, the students began to assault Kalyanasundaram, sources added. On seeing the teacher being attacked by the students, a team of policemen who came by the way intervened and made the students to leave the place.
Kalyanasundaram, meanwhile, sustained injuries to his eyes and was rushed to the Kumbakonam GH, where he is undergoing treatment. Meanwhile, the school administration has reportedly made a list of the students who were involved in the incident.
