TNEA: 90,000 seats still remain vacant
Though the response to engineering seats admission is not that encouraging this year, computer science continues to be the top choice among the aspirants.

The Tamil Nadu Directorate of Technical Education (DOTE) after completing four rounds of counselling for general category students and allocated seats to as many as 76,364 students, 17,000 candidates opted for Computer Science.
The second choice was Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), with a total of 13,814 candidates, while the least preferred was civil engineering with just 5,000 choosing that branch. The counselling began on July 3 and completed on July 28 and about 1.6 lakh participated in the process.
A senior official from the DOTE told DT Next on Monday, that of the total 1.6 students, who participated in the counselling, 76,364 candidates were allotted got seats and added that although 1.6 lakh seats were available in 500 engineering colleges, 90,000 seats were still vacant.
“More than 90 per cent seats in government engineering colleges have been filled up,” he said and added that only about 20 per cent seats have been filled in self-finance colleges across the State.
According to the official, the final list of the seat allocation will be released during first week of August. “The engineering colleges will be opened during the second week of August for new admissions,” he added.
Counselling for ‘absentees’ today
The DOTE official said that for the supplementary counselling more than 8,000 applications have been received. “In addition, students, who missed the counselling process, still wanting to join engineering courses, will be given a final chance to apply and participate in the counselling on July 30,” he added.
