Will nab killers soon, claim Tirunelveli police

Though there has been no major breakthrough in the murder case of former mayor of Tirunelveli Uma Maheswari, police on Friday claimed that they have neared the assailants. Along with the ex-mayor, her husband, Murugasankaran, and their servant maid Mariammal were also killed on that day.

The special teams formed to probe the case are looking into several angles, but the investigators ruled out political rivalry behind the murder.

However, police are also checking the real estate deals as the former mayor and her husband were involved in the business. So, detailed inquiries were being carried out to find out if there was any dispute in financial transactions in their real estate business, which could also be a reason for the triple murder.

Sources said that the assailants have carefully executed the murder leaving no evidence. The murderers had allegedly used sharp weapons and had stabbed the three victims multiple times. Though some fingerprints were lifted from the scene, none of them gave any strong clue to identify the killers.

Though police brought several people close toUma Maheswari and Murugasangakaran into the investigation ring, they could not get any lead. Inquiries with history-sheerters who were involved in murder cases were also grilled. Nellai Commissioner of Police Mahesh Kumar, who formed three special teams, is directly in constant touch with the investigators who have submitted an initial report.

With police retrieving footage from CCTV cameras installed at an eatery near the crime scene and a place of worship, they suspect that contract killers could have been hired to execute the crime.
