Pondy diary: 8-month-old son orphaned after couple commits suicide
A couple allegedly committed suicide--leaving behind their eight-month-old son--after a quarrel between them at Nettapakkam near here on Wednesday night.

According to police, Saravanan (33), an employee of a private industry was addicted to liquor and he used to pick up frequent quarrel with his wife Rajamani (24), in an inebriated condition.
Similar, on Wednesday, a quarrel erupted between them as Rajamani scolded Saravanan for drinking. Following this, Saravanan went out and when he returned home in the night, he was shocked to see Rajamani who by then committed suicide by hanging in their house. Later, Saravanan informed about the death to his relatives in Villippuram and said that he would also commit suicide.
After ending the call, he switched off his cell phone. However, by the time his relatives reached Nettapakkam, Saravanan also committed suicide by hanging. The relatives immediately informed the Nattapakkam police and the police sent the bodies for post- mortem. A case was also registered.
Woman arrested for assaulting ticket checker
A 47-year-old woman was arrested for assaulting the ticket checker of a private bus here on Wednesday. According to the police, Vinnarasi boarded a private bus in front of the Jipmer hospital to go to the new bus stand. After some time when she saw another bus starting, she alighted and boarded that bus.
However, the bus went slowly and the bus in which she boarded first overtook the bus in which Vinnarasi was travelling. Irate over this, Vinnarasi allegedly abused the checker and assaulted him. The checker then asked the driver to take the bus to Orleanpet police station. When the bus reached Orleanpet police station, the checker Thavamani lodged a complaint against Vinnarasi and she was arrested. She was produced before a judge and lodged in the Central Prison here.
Two killed, 1 hurt as lorry runs over
Two youth were killed and another seriously injured after they fell from the motorcycle they were travelling in and was subsequently ran over by a lorry on the East Coast Road at Pillaichavady in Villippuram district late on Wednesday evening. Police said Karthi (20), Arun (20) and Iyyanarappan (21), hailing from Bommayarpalayam, was riding triples on a motorcycle from Kanagachettikkupam to Puducherry. When they reached Pillaichavady, a cow ran across the two-wheeler and since Arun was riding the vehicle speedily, he could not control it and thereby hit the cow. Under the impact all the three were thrown off the vehicle and on the road, when a mini-lorry coming in that direction ran over the trio killing Karthi and Arun on the spot. The seriously injured Iyyanarappan was rushed to PIMS. Auroville police sent the bodies of Karthi and Arun to the same hospital for post-mortem.
