    Pocket money demand: Woman burns son alive

    It is one of the unheard cases, a woman unable to bear the constant demand of her 21-year-old son, a college student, for pocket money set him on fire and he succumbed to burns on Monday.

    Police said P Ajith Kumar (21) was studying B Com final year of Wakf Board College at KK Nagar in Madurai.
     
    Ajith Kumar was in the habit of constantly demanding money from his mother P Saroja (46), for his lavish lifestyle. Saroja was as a daily wage labourer in a company and the sole breadwinner of the family, as her husband was bed-ridden owing to chronic illness. So, she could not fulfill the demands of her son.
     
    Recently, Ajith demanded his mother to purchase a motorcycle for him to go to college.
     
    She obtained a loan for huge interest and bought the two-wheeler for him. Despite knowing the poor financial condition of the family, he continued to pester his mother for pocket money every day.
    Infuriated by his behaviour, Saroja poured kerosene on Ajith Kumar on Friday last, when he was sleeping in the house at Kaalikaappan village here. 
    A badly injured Ajith was admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital with more than 60 per cent burns. However, on Monday he succumbed to the burns.
    Law student set afire for ending relationship
    In the continuing cases of gory murders of woman over relationship intrigue, a law college student was set afire by a 26-year-old man after she refused to continue the friendship in Tiruchy on Monday. Soon after the incident, the man went into hiding, while the woman is battling for life with more than 40 per cent burns. 
    Police said that S Ramya (23), a II year student of Government Law College in Tiruchy, was residing on Kajamalai Muslim street. The accused was identified as Dhava Selvan (26), a resident of Karaikal.
     
    Both were reportedly in a relationship till sometime back. Around 1.30 pm on Monday, Dhava Selvan came to the house of Ramya and was talking to her. Suddenly, he doused Ramya with petrol and set her ablaze. While Ramya screamed for help, the man fled from the spot.
    On hearing the woman student’s cries, neighbours rushed to the house and put out the fire. However, by then Ramya had suffered around 40 per cent burns.
     
    Later, the neighbours rushed Ramya to the Government Hospital, where she was battling for life till reports last came in.
     
    Based on information from locals, KK Nagar police registered a case and commenced the investigation into the incident.
    Initial investigations by police revealed that Ramya was in a relationship earlier with one Gunasekaran and married him. However, the couple had frequent disputes on various issues and a few days after wedding, she separated from Gunasekaran. The couple later applied for divorce.
     
    Subsequently, Ramya met Dhava Selvan, who was running a travel agency in Tiruchy, and both went to many places, including abroad destinations, together. Meanwhile, Dhava Selvan faced a huge loss in his business.
     
    Following this, Ramya started avoiding him and developed friendship with a few other men. Infuriated by this, Dhava Selvan came to Ramya’s house and confronted her over friendship with other men. As Ramya did not give a proper reply, he had attempted to burn her alive.
