City to receive heavy showers this week
The city is expected to receive heavy showers in the coming week as Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) expects favourable wind patterns for Chennai. Also, heavy to very heavy rain is expected at isolated places in various districts, including Coimbatore, The Nilgiris, Theni and Tirunelveli districts.

On Sunday, Coimbatore received the highest amount of rainfall (9 cm), while parts of Tiruvallur and The Nilgiris received 4 cm. For next five days, scattered rainfall is expected in parts of the State and heavy to moderate rainfall in the Southern parts of Tamil Nadu.
For the past week, Chennai, Ariyalur, Dharmapuri, Perambalur, Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Villupuram and southern suburbs of Chennai received excess rainfall than normal. However, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Kanyakumari, Karur, Namakkal, Pudukottai, Theni, Tirunelveli, Tiruppur and Toothukodi districts remained largely deficient. Other districts that did not receive sufficient rainfall include Erode, Nagapattinam, The Nilgiris, Sivaganga and Tiruchy.
During the day, the temperatures have dropped when compared to last week’s average temperature. The temperatures were about 38 degrees Celsius last week, whereas, on Sunday, the maximum temperature was 35.3 degrees Celsius and 35.4 degrees Celsius respectively at both the weather stations in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam. The minimum temperatures were 28.1 degrees Celsius and 26.8 degrees Celsius in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam respectively.
For next 48 hours, the sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy in Chennai with light to moderate rain expected in some areas. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 36 degrees Celsius and 27 degrees Celsius respectively.
Weather blogger Pradeep John stated that Chennai is likely to witness cumulus clouds and sudden rains during evening hours are expected. He stated that these rains are purely associated with sea breeze and there can be intense rains in few parts of the city, while TN ghats will continue to get heavy rain.
