The Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) university has signed an MoU with the State University of New York (SUNY) at Binghamton which will benefit students from various engineering disciplines by enabling them to complete seven semesters at VIT and undertake the remaining three semesters at SUNY to get both UG and PG degrees in one go, VIT chancellor G Viswanathan said.

Talking to media, Viswanathan said this was the first time such a programme was being implemented in the country as until now, only the 2 + 2 years education programme was followed. While VIT university would provide the UG degree, SUNY would provide the student with the PG degree, he added.

Stating that the programme would become operational from this semester, Viswanathan said 15 students have already expressed willingness to join the education programme. The scheme was the result of collaboration between the centres of learning at both educational institutions for more than a decade, he said.

SUNY executive vice provost Krishnaswami Srihari said VIT was chosen as most courses here were ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) certified. He added that both institutions were also working together on autonomous vehicles which included all modes of driverless transport, even drones and ships. A centre for autonomous and intelligent driving systems would soon be set up at VIT in effect to this, he added. SUNY management studies representative Uphinder Dhillon said areas for cooperation between both institutes in the area of management are also being explored.
