16 killed in two accidents in State
Sixteen persons were killed in two separate accidents at Kallakurichi in Villupuram district and near Karungulam in Thoothukudi in the early hours on Thursday.

Sixteen persons were killed in two separate accidents at Kallakurichi in Villupuram district and near Karungulam in Thoothukudi in the early hours on Thursday.
According to sources, of the 10 victims in Kallakurichi accident, eight were migrant labourers. A group of 14 migrant workers, all residing at Uthramerur in Chengalpattu district, were being taken in a van arranged by contractor Dhaneswaran to Kangeyam in Erode district for installing electric poles of Tangedco.
While the van was nearing Emaper bypass near Kallakurichi around 2.45 am on Thursday, the van collided with a Chennai-bound omni bus from Coimbatore with 24 on board. M Manikandan (32) from Madurai, was driving the van, while A Rajendran (56) from Alangulam in Tirunelveli district, was at the wheel of the bus.
In the impact of the collision, eight migrant workers, identified as U Mukendar Phuniya (35), Karoo Razak (30), K Anoj Razak (19), L Simon Razak (28), A Chottu Kumar (23), L Raj Phuniya (30), K Anoj Munya (35), and D Ashok Phuniya (37), all from different parts of Jharkand, van driver M Manikandan (32) and bus driver A Ranjendran (56), all were crushed to death.
Some of the inmates of the van sustained grievous injuries while the commuters on the bus escaped with minor injuries.
Following the accident, traffic on the stretch was affected for several hours.
On information, Kallakurichi police rushed to the spot, rescued the injured and rushed them to the Kallakurichi Government Hospital. The bodies of victims were sent to the Kallakurichi Government Hospitalfor autopsy. Later, the passengers of the omni bus were shifted to a spare bus and resumed their journey.
Villupuram Range Deputy Inspector General Santosh Kumar, District Collector L Subramanian, District Superintendent of Police S Jeyakumar, inspected the spot and also inquired the injured persons in the hospital.
Three-month-old boy among 6 victims
In the other accident near Karungulam of Thoothukudi district on the wee hours of Thursday, six persons, including a three-month-old boy was killed and twelve others suffered injuries, when the van they in which were travelling rammed the parapet and fell off a bridge.Â
According to sources, a van with a group of 18 devotees from Thiruthangal near Sivakasiin Virudhunagar district was proceeding to the Murugan temple at Tiruchendur. Around 1.15 am on Thursday, when the van was nearing Karungulam in Thoothukudi district, the vehicle hit the parapet and fell off a bridge before overturning on the road beneath.
In the impact, six persons were killed on the spot. The deceased were identified as Packialakshmi (46), wife of Kalirajan, Muthulakshmi (65) wife of Raman, G Nithish (4), S Jegatheeswaran from Thiruthangal, (12), K Arunachalapandi (35) of and a three-month old baby A Anish Pandi of Kammapatti near Srivilliputhur. Of the 12 persons, who suffered injuries, nine were admitted to Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital and three others were discharged after treatment. The condition of injured who are currently receiving treatment in the hospital is said to be stable.
Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police Arun Balagopalan along with police personnel from Seidunganallur and officials from Department of Revenue inspected the accident spot.Â
Preliminary inquiries revealed that Murugesan, the van driver, was in an inebriated state when the accident occurred. Police suspect that the driver could have lost control of the van and rammed into the parapet. Based on a complaint lodged by one Sugumaran (58) of Pandian Nagar in Thiruthangal, Seidunganallur police registered a case under Sections 279, 337 and 304 (A) of IPC. Further investigations are on in both the cases.
