According to sources, a total of 15 acres of land was acquired by the government from a private group of companies owned by a person from Nagercoil for establishing the Government Engineering College in 1984. While the government awarded a compensation of Rs 500 for one cent of land, the owner objected and moved the High Court demanding more. The court then reportedly ordered to pay Rs 20 crore to the owner. During 2005 to 2012, about Rs six crores was paid. Meanwhile, the Tirunelveli Revenue Department moved the court appealing against the large amount and filed a plea seeking to lower the compensation. However, the court dismissed the plea. As there was a delay in settling the compensation, the owner filed a plea before Tirunelveli sub court which ordered to attach the properties in the RDO office. Based on the order, three air conditioners, eight ceiling fans, chairs and tables were seized.
