    Heavy downpour in Thanjavur on Monday

    After the Gaja cyclone, the delta region experienced heavy rains from Sunday night to Monday. The downpour that started from 7.30 pm lasted for three hours till 10.30 pm on Sunday in Nagapattinam district which recorded an average rainfall of 46.50 mm.


    Among the places that received good rain were Sirkazhi, Mayiladuthurai and Poombuhar. The showers came as a boon to farmers who have cultivated Kuruvai. They said that the much-anticipated rain would help the crop in a major way.


    In Tiruvarur, many pockets experienced heavy rain accompanied by lightning on Sunday. The district received heavy to very heavy rain in areas like Needamangalam, Mananargudi and Nannilam. Needamangalam received maximum rain of 37.20 mm, while Tiruvarur town received 13.40 mm.


    Meanwhile, in Thanajvur, farmers who were getting ready for Kuruvai harvest, expressed happiness over the rain.


    In rain-related incidents, a tile-roofed house struck by thunder collapsed at Kavaskara street in Thanjavur. Viswanathan (53), an inmate of the house, who sustained severe injuries, was rushed to Thanajvur Medical College Hospital.


    Pudukkottai, neighbouring district, which has been witnessing rains for the past few days, also experienced heavy downpour on Sunday and Monday. Ponnamaravathi received a significant quantum of rain. Many roads were inundated in various parts, including Aranthangi and Gandharvakottai, in the district. Rains also lashed Perambalur and Ariyalur.
