2 college students killed as bike hits mini-van in Thoothukudi

The deceased were identified as L Arun Kumar (18), resident of Bryant Nagar, Thoothukudi and J Karpagavel (18) of Muthaiyapuram. They were first year students pursuing B Sc Microbiology in self-financed section of a college located on Tiruchendur road, sources said.

The accident occurred when the duo riding a motorcycle collided with a mini-van.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, R Prakash, stated that both boys succumbed to injuries. On enquiry, it was revealed that Arun Kumar drove the bike at great speed, which ultimately ended their lives. It was also noted that both did not wear helmets.

Two weeks ago, Arun Kumar pestered his father, who worked in a hotel and bought the 220 cc bike. Since his college hours got over during forenoon, Arun Kumar used to drop off his friend Karpagavel at Muthaiyapuram.

But on that fateful day, they changed plan and went to Authoor to meet friends and the accident occurred during their return. The van driver made all his efforts to avoid them, but in vain. The driver was picked up for interrogation, Prakash said. Muthaiyapuram police have filed a case.
